Subtract Decimals Word Problems
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Subtract Decimals Word Problems" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core 5.NBT.B.7. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on decimals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and decimal word problems and measurement never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this decimal word problems and measurement worksheet?
⌄
Ask your child to underline the question and say which operation it needs before solving. Have them write the unit or dollar sign with every answer. For multi-step problems, cover the second question until the first step is done. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Solve decimal subtraction stories about what is left and how much more. A word problem tells a short story with numbers. To find how much is left or how much more, subtract. Line up the decimal points first. The directions on the page read: Read each story. Then, subtract in the box and write the unit. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this decimal word problems and measurement worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with decimal word problems and measurement. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you solve a decimal word problem?
⌄
Read the story, decide what is asked and which operation fits, then line up or count the decimal places and solve. Always write the unit or the dollar sign with the answer.
What is a multi-step word problem?
⌄
A problem that needs more than one operation. Ana buys 2 notebooks at $1.20 and pays $5.00: first find the cost (2 x $1.20 = $2.40), then the change ($5.00 - $2.40 = $2.60).
How do decimals help with metric conversions?
⌄
Metric units change by 10, 100 or 1,000. To change to a smaller unit, multiply (2.5 m = 250 cm); to change to a larger unit, divide (450 g = 0.45 kg).
Which standards do these worksheets support?
⌄
The story pages support CCSS 5.NBT.B.7 (operations with decimals) and the metric page supports 5.MD.A.1 (convert measurement units).
What decimal skills do 5th graders need?
⌄
5th graders read, write, compare and round decimals to thousandths (CCSS 5.NBT.A.3 and 5.NBT.A.4), understand place value patterns and powers of 10 (5.NBT.A.1 and 5.NBT.A.2), and add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths (5.NBT.B.7).
What order should I teach decimals in 5th grade?
⌄
Start with place value to thousandths, then comparing, ordering and rounding. Move to adding and subtracting, then multiplying and dividing. Finish with word problems, mixed operations and a unit review. The subtopics on this page follow that order.
How do I help my child place the decimal point correctly?
⌄
Estimate first. Rounding each number to a whole number gives a ballpark answer, so 4.8 x 3.1 should be about 15, which rules out 1.488 and 148.8.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 55 sheets have an answer key, and the two page sheets have a two page key.
