Divide Decimals by Decimals

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Divide Decimals by Decimals" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core 5.NBT.B.7. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on decimals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and dividing decimals never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this dividing decimals worksheet?

⌄

Ask your child to check every quotient by multiplying it by the divisor. On the decimal by decimal page, have them draw arrows to show the points moving the same number of places. Compare answers with the key and redo any problem where the check did not match.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Divide decimals by decimals by moving both points to make the divisor whole. The divisor is the number you divide by. Move both decimal points the same number of places to make it whole. The directions on the page read: Move both points to rewrite each problem. Then, divide. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this dividing decimals worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with dividing decimals. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you divide a decimal by a whole number?

⌄

Think of the decimal as tenths or hundredths and divide those parts. 7.2 / 3 is 72 tenths / 3 = 24 tenths, or 2.4. Check by multiplying: 2.4 x 3 = 7.2.

How do you divide a decimal by a decimal?

⌄

Move the point in the divisor to make it a whole number, and move the point in the dividend the same number of places. 2.4 / 0.6 becomes 24 / 6 = 4.

Why can a whole number divided by a whole number be a decimal?

⌄

When it does not divide evenly, write the dividend with a point and zeros and keep dividing. 3 / 4 is 300 hundredths / 4 = 75 hundredths, or 0.75.

Which standard do these worksheets support?

⌄

They support CCSS 5.NBT.B.7, dividing decimals to hundredths using models, place value strategies and the relationship between multiplication and division.

What decimal skills do 5th graders need?

⌄

5th graders read, write, compare and round decimals to thousandths (CCSS 5.NBT.A.3 and 5.NBT.A.4), understand place value patterns and powers of 10 (5.NBT.A.1 and 5.NBT.A.2), and add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths (5.NBT.B.7).

What order should I teach decimals in 5th grade?

⌄

Start with place value to thousandths, then comparing, ordering and rounding. Move to adding and subtracting, then multiplying and dividing. Finish with word problems, mixed operations and a unit review. The subtopics on this page follow that order.

How do I help my child place the decimal point correctly?

⌄

Estimate first. Rounding each number to a whole number gives a ballpark answer, so 4.8 x 3.1 should be about 15, which rules out 1.488 and 148.8.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 55 sheets have an answer key, and the two page sheets have a two page key.
