Round Decimals to the Nearest Tenth

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Round Decimals to the Nearest Tenth" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core 5.NBT.A.4. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on decimals, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and rounding decimals and number lines never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this rounding decimals and number lines worksheet?

⌄

Have your child underline the digit in the rounding place and circle the digit to its right before deciding. When an answer looks wrong, sketch the two possible answers on a number line and place the number between them. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Round decimals to the nearest tenth with a number line check. To round to the nearest tenth, look at the hundredths digit. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, keep the tenths digit. The directions on the page read: Round each number to the nearest tenth. Then, check which tenth is closer. Finish every problem. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this rounding decimals and number lines worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade decimals, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with rounding decimals and number lines. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you round a decimal to the nearest tenth?

⌄

Look at the hundredths digit. If it is 5 or more, round the tenths digit up; if it is 4 or less, keep it. 3.46 rounds to 3.5 because the hundredths digit is 6.

Why check rounding on a number line?

⌄

The number line shows which tenth or hundredth the number is actually closer to, so the rule makes sense instead of feeling like magic. 5.683 sits nearer 5.68 than 5.69.

How do you show thousandths on a number line?

⌄

Zoom in between two hundredths, like 5.12 and 5.13, and split the space into 10 equal parts. Each part is 0.001, so the 4th mark is 5.124.

Which standards do these worksheets support?

⌄

The rounding pages support CCSS 5.NBT.A.4 (round decimals to any place) and the number line page supports 5.NBT.A.3 (read and compare decimals to thousandths).

What decimal skills do 5th graders need?

⌄

5th graders read, write, compare and round decimals to thousandths (CCSS 5.NBT.A.3 and 5.NBT.A.4), understand place value patterns and powers of 10 (5.NBT.A.1 and 5.NBT.A.2), and add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths (5.NBT.B.7).

What order should I teach decimals in 5th grade?

⌄

Start with place value to thousandths, then comparing, ordering and rounding. Move to adding and subtracting, then multiplying and dividing. Finish with word problems, mixed operations and a unit review. The subtopics on this page follow that order.

How do I help my child place the decimal point correctly?

⌄

Estimate first. Rounding each number to a whole number gives a ballpark answer, so 4.8 x 3.1 should be about 15, which rules out 1.488 and 148.8.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 55 sheets have an answer key, and the two page sheets have a two page key.
