Add two 2-digit numbers in columns - no carrying

Students must know to add ones to ones and tens to tens separately, a direct application of place value structure in a computational context.

Problems where the ones digits sum to 10 or more are excluded — for example, 47 + 35 requires carrying, while 23 + 14 does not.

Students build automaticity with the column format and place value alignment, so when carrying is introduced in 2nd grade, only the regrouping step is new.
