How do you teach number sequences to first graders?

Hundred charts are essential visual tools for number sequencing. Use a pointer to count together, skip over numbers in skip-count patterns, and ask students to find missing numbers by finding their position on the chart. Worksheets with partially completed number lines and sequence fill-in-the-blanks build sequential counting fluency.

What is skip counting and why does it matter in first grade?

Skip counting means counting by a number other than 1 — by 2s, 5s, or 10s. It is a foundational skill for multiplication and understanding multiples. First graders who skip count fluently by 5s and 10s develop much stronger sense of how our number system is organized. Skip counting by 2s builds awareness of even numbers and later supports multiplication facts.
