First graders should read and write numbers 0-120 (CCSS 1.NBT.A.1), count to 120 starting from any number, compare two two-digit numbers using <, =, > (1.NBT.B.3), and understand place value of tens and ones (1.NBT.B.2). They should also use strategies to add and subtract within 100.

Base-ten blocks are the most effective concrete tool: one rod of 10 and individual cubes visually show that 23 is 2 tens and 3 ones. Practice writing numbers in expanded form (23 = 20 + 3) and standard form. Worksheets that ask students to draw base-ten representations alongside writing the number reinforce place value understanding.

Most first graders should confidently read, write, and sequence numbers to 100 by midyear, with extension to 120 by year's end per CCSS 1.NBT.A.1. If a student struggles to sequence numbers beyond 30, focus on the decade transition pattern (29→30, 39→40) which is where most errors occur.
