What clock positions mark quarter hours?⌄
The minute hand at the 3 (15 minutes) marks quarter past, and the minute hand at the 9 (45 minutes) marks quarter to the next hour.
Why are quarter-hour times harder to read than whole or half hours?⌄
At :15 and :45, the minute hand is at intermediate positions (3 and 9) that require students to know those numbers represent 15 and 45 minutes, not just count them as ordinary clock numbers.
Is quarter-hour reading a 1st grade or 2nd grade standard?⌄
CCSS requires telling time to the hour and half-hour in 1st grade (1.MD.B.3); quarter hours are typically introduced as enrichment in 1st grade and formally covered in 2nd grade.
