Subtract Within 10 with Ten Frames
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Subtract Within 10 with Ten Frames" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core K.OA.A.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on subtraction, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and subtraction strategies never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Kindergarten math worksheet: subtract within 10 by counting the dots left after some are crossed out. Answer key included. Part of our subtraction strategies collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with the pictures: have your child cross out the objects to take away and count what is left. Move to the number line and count back pages once taking away within 5 feels easy. Use the answer key to check, then talk about how the number got smaller.
What students will practice
- Students will subtract within 5 and within 10 using pictures, number lines and ten frames.
- Students will count back from the first number to find a difference.
- Students will solve take away stories and find missing numbers.

FAQ
How do I use this subtraction strategies worksheet?
⌄
Start with the pictures: have your child cross out the objects to take away and count what is left. Move to the number line and count back pages once taking away within 5 feels easy. Use the answer key to check, then talk about how the number got smaller.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Subtract within 10 by counting the dots left after some are crossed out. To subtract with a ten frame, count the dots that are not crossed out. Problems on the page include 5 − 3, 8 − 5 and 9 − 7. The directions on the page read: Look at the dots that are crossed out. Then, count the dots left and write the answer. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this subtraction strategies worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten subtraction, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with subtraction strategies. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a ten frame?
⌄
A grid of ten boxes, two rows of five, filled from the top left. Its value is that amounts become recognizable shapes: a full top row is always five, and eight always looks like a full row plus three. Children start seeing quantities instead of counting them one at a time.
What does this ten frame worksheet ask?
⌄
Part of the frame is filled and your child works out how many more are needed to make 10. Because the empty boxes are visible, the answer can be seen before it is counted, which is exactly the bridge from counting to knowing.
Why is making 10 such a focus in early math?
⌄
Our number system is built on tens, so the pairs that make 10 turn up everywhere later. A child who knows 6 and 4 instantly can handle 16 plus 4, and later 26 plus 4, without counting. It is one of the highest value facts to have automatic.
What does subtraction mean in kindergarten?
⌄
Subtraction means taking away: start with a group, take some away and count what is left. The sheets show the taken away objects crossed out or in a second color so children can see the story behind 5 - 2.
What does count back mean?
⌄
Count back means starting at the first number and counting down by the second number. For 7 - 2, a child says 7, then 6, 5. The count back sheet gives a box for each count so the child can track the steps.
Should children learn addition before subtraction?
⌄
Most children are more comfortable with subtraction once they can add within 10, because a subtraction fact is the other side of an addition fact. The number bond sheet shows how the whole, one part and the missing part fit together.
Which standards do these sheets support?
⌄
They support K.OA.A.5 (subtract within 5), K.OA.A.2 (subtract within 10 and solve take away stories) and K.OA.A.3 (break a number into two parts).
What subtraction concepts should kindergarteners learn?
⌄
Kindergarteners should understand subtraction as taking apart or taking from. Per CCSS K.OA.A.1, they should represent subtraction with objects, drawings, and equations within 10. Fluency is expected within 5 (K.OA.A.5).
How do you teach subtraction to a 5-year-old?
⌄
Start with concrete objects: give your child 5 crackers and ask them to eat 2, then count what remains. Use visual worksheets that show crossed-out items before introducing number sentences. The key is connecting the physical act of removing to the minus sign.
Is subtraction harder than addition for kindergarteners?
⌄
Most children find subtraction more challenging because it requires understanding that a group is getting smaller. Research suggests introducing subtraction alongside addition so students see them as related operations. Worksheets that pair addition and subtraction facts help build this connection.
