FAQ

What is a line plot?

A line plot shows data on a number line, with each data point marked as an X above its value. Multiple Xs above the same number show that value occurred multiple times. For example, if four students are 48 inches tall, there will be four Xs above 48 on the line plot.

What kind of data do 2nd graders display in line plots?

CCSS 2.MD.D.9 asks students to measure objects to the nearest whole unit and display the data in a line plot. Typical examples: lengths of pencils, heights of plants, number of books read. The data must be measured (not just categorical) to use a line plot.

How is a line plot different from a bar graph?

A line plot shows individual data points on a continuous scale — you can see every measurement. A bar graph shows totals per category. Line plots are better for seeing the distribution and spread of measurements; bar graphs are better for comparing totals across categories.
