Why do students only need to think about the tens digit when adding whole tens?⌄
Because whole tens have a zero in the ones place, only the tens digit changes — the ones digit of the original number stays the same, making these problems excellent for mental math.
How do these worksheets support place value understanding?⌄
Students must recognize that adding 30 to 47 changes only the tens column (4 tens + 3 tens = 7 tens), which deepens their understanding of how digits in different positions interact.
What should students do if the tens digits sum to more than 9?⌄
When the tens digits add up to 10 or more, students must regroup into the hundreds place — these problems are a great early introduction to three-digit sums.
