Spell At Family Words
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Spell At Family Words" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core L.K.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and word families never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this word families worksheet?
⌄
Write the family ending on a card and slide different first letters in front of it so your child can read each new word. Then do the page. Check with the answer key and ask for one more family word out loud.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle the at family words, then trace and copy cat and hat. The directions on the page read: Circle each word in the at family. Then, trace each word and copy it on the line below. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this word families worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with word families. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do word families help kindergartners spell?
⌄
Word families let a child spell many words from one ending. Words in a family share the same ending, like cat, hat and mat in the at family, so once a child knows the ending, they only need the first sound to spell a new word.
Which word families should kindergartners learn first?
⌄
Short vowel families such as at, an, ig and op come first because they use the CVC pattern and common letters. These four pages follow that order.
How is this different from the rhyming topic?
⌄
The rhyming pages train the ear to hear matching sounds. These pages are about spelling: children circle words with the written ending and copy them, so the focus is on the letters.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. Each of the four word family pages has an answer key showing the circled words and the traced words.
What spelling should a kindergartener be able to do?
⌄
By the end of kindergarten, children write a letter for most consonant and short vowel sounds and spell simple words phonetically (CCSS L.K.2.C and L.K.2.D). Spelling three-letter CVC words like cat, hen and mop by sound is the main goal.
What is a CVC word?
⌄
A CVC word has a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, like sun, bed or pig. Children can sound out each letter, so CVC words are the first words most kindergarteners spell on their own.
How can I help my kindergartener spell words at home?
⌄
Say the word slowly and stretch each sound, then ask which letter makes that sound. Start with the first sound, then the last, then the middle vowel, which is hardest to hear. The CVC spelling pages follow the same order.
