Plan and Write a Cinquain

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Plan and Write a Cinquain" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core RL.4.5. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on poetry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and cinquain poems never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Plan and write a cinquain, 4th grade. Kids brainstorm a topic, choose a word or syllable cinquain, add a simile, then draft and check a final copy. Part of our cinquain poems poetry collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Read the example cinquain aloud and count the words or syllables in each line together. Keep the line jobs in view while students plan, so they can check each row. Remind students that line 5 renames line 1. After writing, have them read the poem aloud and check it against the pattern.

What students will practice

  • Students will name the job of each line in a five-line word cinquain: a noun, two adjectives, three -ing verbs, a feeling and a new name.
  • Students will sort words into nouns, adjectives and -ing verbs and use them to build a cinquain.
  • Older students will count syllables in a 2-4-6-8-2 syllable cinquain, fix a line that breaks the pattern, and write their own.

FAQ

How do I use this cinquain poems worksheet?

⌄

Read the example cinquain aloud and count the words or syllables in each line together. Keep the line jobs in view while students plan, so they can check each row. Remind students that line 5 renames line 1. After writing, have them read the poem aloud and check it against the pattern.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Six cinquain worksheets from 2nd to 4th grade, two per grade. 2nd grade students label the line jobs in a cinquain about rain and answer questions, then write a cinquain about a pet. 3rd grade students sort 12 ocean words by part of speech and build a cinquain, then write one about a season. 4th grade students count syllables in two syllable cinquains and fix the line that breaks the pattern, then choose a word or syllable form and plan, draft and check their own. Three of the six sheets have an answer key.

Can I use this cinquain poems worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade poetry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with cinquain poems. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are the rules for a cinquain?

⌄

A word cinquain has five lines: a noun, two adjectives, three -ing verbs, a four-word feeling, and a new name for line 1. A syllable cinquain has 2, 4, 6, 8 and 2 syllables in its five lines.

Why do cinquains help with grammar?

⌄

Each line needs a certain part of speech, so students have to tell a noun from an adjective or a verb to write one. The 3rd grade sheet has them sort 12 words into those groups before building a poem.

What grades are these poetry worksheets for?

⌄

2nd, 3rd and 4th grade, with ten sheets for each grade. Each sheet's description names the grade it was written for, so you can choose a level, or move a child up or down a grade when a sheet feels too easy or too hard.

What kinds of poems do these worksheets cover?

⌄

Five: acrostic poems, haiku, rhyming couplets, cinquains and poetry comprehension. Each type has two sheets per grade, usually one to read or practice the form and one to plan and write a poem. The comprehension sheets use original ClassWeekly poems.

What is a cinquain poem?

⌄

A cinquain is a five-line poem. In the word form used in 2nd and 3rd grade, line 1 is a noun, line 2 has two adjectives, line 3 has three -ing verbs, line 4 is a four-word feeling, and line 5 renames line 1. The 4th grade sheets add the syllable form, with 2, 4, 6, 8 and 2 syllables in its lines.

How do you teach kids to count syllables in a haiku?

⌄

Clap once for each beat as you say a word: car-rot is two claps, so it has two syllables. A haiku has three lines with 5, 7 and 5 syllables. The haiku sheets start with clapping picture words, then counting whole lines, then writing a haiku with one dot for each syllable.

Do the poetry worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

18 of the 30 sheets do: every sheet with a right answer, such as counting syllables, finding rhymes or answering questions about a poem. The poem-writing sheets are open-ended, so there is nothing to mark right or wrong.
