Magnets Push and Pull

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Magnets Push and Pull" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers NGSS 3-PS2-3. That standard sits in the 3rd grade band, so treat this worksheet as an early introduction rather than standards practice for this grade. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and forces and motion never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Magnets Push and Pull
Magnets Push and Pull

5th grade science worksheet: decide if facing magnet poles attract or repel and read a distance test. Answer key included. Part of our forces and motion collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Roll a toy car on carpet and on a smooth floor, or hold two magnets end to end, before the matching pages. For the speed page, time your child walking a measured distance and find their own speed. Check each page with the answer key.

What students will practice

  • Students will find the net force on an object and tell balanced from unbalanced forces.
  • Students will use test data to describe friction and magnetic force.
  • Students will calculate speed and measure force in newtons.

FAQ

How do I use this forces and motion worksheet?

⌄

Roll a toy car on carpet and on a smooth floor, or hold two magnets end to end, before the matching pages. For the speed page, time your child walking a measured distance and find their own speed. Check each page with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Decide if facing magnet poles attract or repel and read a distance test. Every magnet has two poles, north (N) and south (S). Like poles repel (push apart); opposite poles attract (pull together). Magnetic force acts without touching and gets weaker with distance. The directions on the page read: Write facing poles and circle a word for 1 to 3. Then, answer 4 to 6. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this forces and motion worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade forces and motion, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces?

⌄

Balanced forces add up to zero, so an object's motion does not change. Unbalanced forces leave a leftover push or pull, the net force, which makes the object start, stop, speed up or turn.

How do you find speed?

⌄

Divide the distance by the time. A dog that runs 30 feet in 5 seconds has a speed of 6 feet per second. Always write the units.

What does a spring scale measure?

⌄

A spring scale measures force in newtons. When an object hangs from the hook, the spring stretches and the pointer shows the force; a heavier object stretches the spring more.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All five forces and motion sheets have an answer key that shows every answer, including sample answers for the questions children explain in their own words.
