Mealtime Manners, Yes or No?

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Mealtime Manners, Yes or No?" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on health and safety, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and healthy habits at mealtime never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this healthy habits at mealtime worksheet?

⌄

Use the pages around a real meal or snack: wash a piece of fruit together, or count the colors on your child's plate. Ask about hungry and full at the start and end of a meal. Let your child help pack a real lunch after drawing one.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Six mealtime pages for Kindergarten and 1st grade. Children choose water or milk from each pair of drinks, plan and draw a healthy lunchbox, tell hungry from full, and spot good mealtime manners. They also put the steps for washing fruit in order and count the colors on a rainbow tray of food. Five pages have an answer key. For food groups, healthy foods and fruits and vegetables, use the Kindergarten Food and Nutrition worksheets.

Can I use this healthy habits at mealtime worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten health and safety, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with healthy habits at mealtime. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does eat a rainbow mean?

⌄

Eating fruits and vegetables of many colors, like red strawberries, orange carrots and green peas. The rainbow tray page has children count the colors on a plate of food.

How do I help my child notice hungry and full?

⌄

Ask before and during a meal how their tummy feels, and let them stop when they say full. The hungry or full page shows children in both states so they can name the feeling.

What health and safety topics should kindergarteners learn?

⌄

Most kindergarten health lessons cover washing hands and brushing teeth, covering coughs and sneezes, safety at home and on the street, getting enough sleep, staying active and making healthy food choices. These worksheets group them into five sets: hygiene and handwashing, safety, sleep, exercise and healthy habits at mealtime.

How do I teach my child the steps of handwashing?

⌄

Show the steps in order: wet your hands, add soap, scrub the front, back and between your fingers, rinse and dry. Many families sing a short song while scrubbing so children keep going long enough. The handwashing steps cut and paste page lets children put the steps in order themselves, which helps them remember the routine at the sink.

How much sleep does a kindergartener need?

⌄

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 10 to 13 hours in every 24 hours, naps included, for children ages 3 to 5, and 9 to 12 hours for ages 6 to 12. A steady bedtime routine helps most. The sleep pages have children put a bedtime routine in order, sort day and night activities and count the hours between a bedtime clock and a wake-up clock.

Do these worksheets cover food groups and nutrition?

⌄

They cover healthy habits at mealtime: choosing water or milk, packing a healthy lunchbox, listening for hungry or full, mealtime manners and washing fruit. For food groups, healthy foods and fruits and vegetables, use the Kindergarten Food and Nutrition worksheets, which pair well with these pages.
