Match Antonyms
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Match Antonyms" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers Common Core L.4.5.C. If your little one is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and synonyms and antonyms never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

4th grade vocabulary worksheet: match ten words, like ancient and generous, to their antonyms. Answer key included. Part of our synonyms and antonyms collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Ask your child to read each word aloud and use it in a short sentence before matching. For the shades of meaning page, act the words out (nibble, eat, devour) to feel the difference. Check with the answer key.

FAQ
How do I use this synonyms and antonyms worksheet?
⌄
Ask your child to read each word aloud and use it in a short sentence before matching. For the shades of meaning page, act the words out (nibble, eat, devour) to feel the difference. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Match ten words, like ancient and generous, to their antonyms. An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word, like hot and cold. The directions on the page read: Read each word. Then, write the letter of its antonym in the box. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this synonyms and antonyms worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade synonyms and antonyms, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is an antonym?
⌄
A word that means the opposite of another, like hot and cold or up and down. Antonym pairs tend to be the more familiar half of this skill, since the contrast between the two words is sharp and easy to spot.
What does this worksheet ask my child to do?
⌄
Match Antonyms. Matching is the gentlest version of this task, because both halves are on the page and your child only has to pair them up. Start here if the idea is new.
How do I build this vocabulary away from the page?
⌄
Bring it into everyday talk. At dinner or in the car, say a word and ask for a synonym or an antonym on the spot. Vocabulary sticks best when it's tied to a real moment, not just a worksheet.
What synonym and antonym skills do 4th graders need?
⌄
CCSS L.4.5.C asks 4th graders to understand words by relating them to their synonyms and antonyms. In practice that means matching words like polite and courteous, opposites like shallow and deep, and telling the two kinds of pairs apart.
What are shades of meaning?
⌄
Words can mean almost the same thing but differ in strength. Nibble, eat and devour all describe eating, but devour is much stronger. Ordering words like this helps children choose a more exact word when they write.
How can I practice synonyms and antonyms at home?
⌄
Play a quick swap game: say a word like tired and take turns naming a synonym (weary) and an antonym (alert). Ask which synonym is strongest. It takes two minutes and uses the same thinking as these pages.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All four synonyms and antonyms sheets have an answer key.
