Free printable indirect and direct quotations worksheets for 4th grade. Students practice distinguishing between direct quotations (the speaker's exact words in quotation marks) and indirect quotations (paraphrased speech with no quotation marks), and learn to punctuate each correctly. Understanding this distinction is essential for both narrative writing and informational writing with evidence. Part of our punctuation worksheets collection.
What You'll Learn
- Distinguish between direct and indirect quotations in sentences
- Use quotation marks only with direct quotes, not indirect ones
- Rewrite direct quotations as indirect quotations and vice versa
FAQ
What is the difference between a direct and an indirect quotation?⌄
A direct quotation uses the speaker's exact words in quotation marks ('She said, "I'll be there"'), while an indirect quotation paraphrases the meaning without quoting directly ('She said she would be there') — no quotation marks are needed for indirect quotes.
How do students convert a direct quotation to an indirect one?⌄
Students remove the quotation marks, often change the pronoun and verb tense, and introduce the quote with 'that' — 'She said, "I am tired"' becomes 'She said that she was tired.'
Why do 4th graders need to know both forms?⌄
Both are used in academic writing — direct quotes support claims with exact evidence, while indirect quotes summarize or paraphrase sources smoothly within sentences, and students need both for research and informational writing.
