FAQ
What punctuation rules apply when writing dialogue in 4th grade?⌄
Spoken words go inside quotation marks; commas or end punctuation appear inside the closing quote; a new paragraph starts each time a different speaker talks; and dialogue tags are set off with commas.
How do students know which end punctuation to use inside dialogue?⌄
The end punctuation reflects the type of sentence spoken — a period for statements, a question mark for questions, and an exclamation mark for exclamations — and it goes inside the closing quotation mark.
Why is paragraph formatting for new speakers a separate skill to teach?⌄
Starting a new paragraph for each new speaker is a formatting rule unique to dialogue — students must learn it explicitly, as it's not intuitive and significantly improves the readability of their narrative writing.
