FAQ
Where does the comma go in a sentence with dialogue and a dialogue tag?⌄
When a dialogue tag follows a quote, the comma goes inside the closing quotation mark: 'I'm ready,' she said. When the tag comes first, a comma follows the tag: She said, 'I'm ready.'
Why do students struggle with commas and quotation marks together?⌄
The placement rules are counterintuitive for students who reason logically — many expect the comma to go outside the quotes, but American English convention places commas and periods inside closing quotation marks.
How do these rules connect to narrative writing in 4th grade?⌄
CCSS W.4.3b asks students to use dialogue to develop characters and events — correctly punctuating dialogue with commas and quotation marks is therefore a direct writing skill, not just a grammar drill.
