All About Dinosaurs Informative Writing

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"All About Dinosaurs Informative Writing" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and informative writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this informative writing worksheet?

⌄

Read the facts together and check off the ones your child will use. Have your child say the topic sentence out loud first, then write facts in their own words. Finish with a conclusion and compare with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

2nd grade informative writing page about dinosaurs. Informative writing shares true facts about a topic. A title names the topic. The directions on the page read: Read the facts. Then, write a title. Then, write the facts in your own words. The answer key gives a marking guide and a model answer, since answers will vary.

Can I use this informative writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with informative writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does 2nd grade informative writing require?

⌄

CCSS W.2.2 asks second graders to introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement. Each sheet supplies fact cards or a fact box so students practice organizing and writing them.

What is a topic sentence?

⌄

A topic sentence names what the paragraph is about, usually in the first sentence, like "Owls are birds that hunt at night." The facts that follow tell more about the topic.

How long should a 2nd grade informative paragraph be?

⌄

Four to six sentences is typical: a topic sentence, two or three facts and a conclusion. A title and a graphic organizer can come before the paragraph.

Do the informative worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 10 sheets include a key with a marking guide and a model paragraph.

What writing skills should 2nd graders have?

⌄

Second graders write opinion pieces with reasons (CCSS W.2.1), informative paragraphs with facts and a conclusion (W.2.2), and narratives with details, feelings and time words (W.2.3). They also begin to revise and edit with guidance (W.2.5).

What is the difference between an opinion, a narrative and an informative piece?

⌄

An opinion tells what the writer thinks and why. A narrative tells a story in order. An informative piece teaches true facts about a topic. Each page in this topic names its type in the title, so you can choose the one you need.

How long should a 2nd grade paragraph be?

⌄

Four to seven sentences is typical: a topic or opinion sentence, two or three supporting sentences and a closing sentence. The planning boxes on these pages help children organize before they write.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 36 opinion, narrative, informative and writing process sheets have an answer key with a marking guide and a model answer.
