Should Recess Be Longer Opinion Writing

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Should Recess Be Longer Opinion Writing" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and opinion writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this opinion writing worksheet?

⌄

Read the topic together and let your child say the opinion and two reasons out loud first. Write each reason on a separate line, then add a closing sentence. Use the answer key to compare structure, not exact words.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

2nd grade opinion writing page about whether recess should be longer. An opinion tells what you think. A reason tells why. Think about yes and no before you choose. The directions on the page read: Read the topic. Then, write a reason for both sides in the chart. Then, write your opinion. The answer key gives a marking guide and a model answer, since answers will vary.

Can I use this opinion writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with opinion writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does 2nd grade opinion writing require?

⌄

CCSS W.2.1 asks second graders to introduce a topic, state an opinion, give reasons that support it, use linking words like because and also, and write a concluding statement. Each sheet scaffolds those parts with boxes, a chart or a model.

How many reasons should a 2nd grader give?

⌄

Two reasons is a good target. Ask for a reason, then ask for a second one that is different, joined with also or another reason. A short closing sentence that repeats the opinion completes the piece.

What if my child cannot think of reasons?

⌄

Try a chart with yes and no, as several sheets do, and think of reasons for both sides first. Then pick the side with the better reasons. A word bank and a model on some pages give extra help.

Do the opinion worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 10 sheets include a key with a marking guide and a model piece, since answers vary.

What writing skills should 2nd graders have?

⌄

Second graders write opinion pieces with reasons (CCSS W.2.1), informative paragraphs with facts and a conclusion (W.2.2), and narratives with details, feelings and time words (W.2.3). They also begin to revise and edit with guidance (W.2.5).

What is the difference between an opinion, a narrative and an informative piece?

⌄

An opinion tells what the writer thinks and why. A narrative tells a story in order. An informative piece teaches true facts about a topic. Each page in this topic names its type in the title, so you can choose the one you need.

How long should a 2nd grade paragraph be?

⌄

Four to seven sentences is typical: a topic or opinion sentence, two or three supporting sentences and a closing sentence. The planning boxes on these pages help children organize before they write.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 36 opinion, narrative, informative and writing process sheets have an answer key with a marking guide and a model answer.
