A complex sentence combines an independent clause with a dependent clause introduced by a subordinating conjunction (because, when, if, although) - only the independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence.

When the dependent clause comes at the beginning of the sentence, it is followed by a comma - for example, 'Because it was raining, we stayed inside.' If the dependent clause comes second, no comma is needed.
