Write a Friendly Letter

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Write a Friendly Letter" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.4. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing topics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and informative writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this informative writing worksheet?

⌄

Read the facts or topic together and sort what belongs where before writing. For the letter, say who the letter is to and why. For compare and contrast, fill the alike box first.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

3rd grade writing page: write a friendly letter. A friendly letter has five parts: the date, a greeting, the body, a closing, and your name. The directions on the page read: Read the topic. Then, write a friendly letter. Then, check that it has all five parts. The answer key gives a marking guide and a model answer, since answers will vary.

Can I use this informative writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade writing topics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with informative writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does 3rd grade informative writing require?

⌄

CCSS W.3.2 asks third graders to introduce a topic, group related facts, develop the topic with facts and details, and end with a concluding statement. Headings and boxes on these sheets help students group facts.

How do I teach compare and contrast?

⌄

To compare is to tell how things are alike, and to contrast is to tell how they are different. A three box organizer works well: alike in the middle, and different on each side.

What are the five parts of a friendly letter?

⌄

The date, a greeting, the body, a closing and the signature. The friendly letter sheet has students write each part and check that all five are present.

Do the informative worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All four sheets include a key with a marking guide and a model response.

What writing skills do 3rd graders need?

⌄

Third graders write opinion pieces with linked reasons (CCSS W.3.1), informative texts that group facts (W.3.2) and narratives with dialogue and description (W.3.3). They also plan, revise and edit their work (W.3.5) and use capitals, commas and quotation marks correctly (L.3.2).

How do I help my child write a strong opening and ending?

⌄

Teach a hook for the first sentence, like a question to the reader, and a conclusion that restates the main idea in new words. The hook and conclusion sheets give an example and a checklist.

Do the 3rd grade writing worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 15 new sheets include an answer key with a marking guide and a model response.
