FAQ
What is the rule for creating equivalent fractions, and why does it work?⌄
Multiplying or dividing both numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number produces an equivalent fraction because this is the same as multiplying by 1 (in the form n/n), which doesn't change the value.
How many equivalent fractions can be written for any given fraction?⌄
Infinitely many — every fraction has an infinite family of equivalent fractions generated by multiplying numerator and denominator by 2, 3, 4, and so on indefinitely.
When do students use equivalent fractions in real math tasks?⌄
Equivalent fractions are used to add fractions with unlike denominators, simplify fractions to lowest terms, compare fractions, and convert between fractions and decimals.
