FAQ
How do students find a remainder in a division problem?⌄
Divide to find the largest quotient possible, multiply the quotient by the divisor to find the product, then subtract that product from the dividend — what remains is the remainder.
How is a remainder recorded in division?⌄
The remainder is written after the quotient with an 'R' — for example, 29 ÷ 4 = 7 R1 — and students must understand that the remainder is always less than the divisor.
Why is it important that the remainder is always less than the divisor?⌄
If the remainder were equal to or greater than the divisor, the quotient could be increased by 1 — so a remainder greater than the divisor signals an error in the quotient.
