FAQ

How do students find a remainder in a division problem?

Divide to find the largest quotient possible, multiply the quotient by the divisor to find the product, then subtract that product from the dividend — what remains is the remainder.

How is a remainder recorded in division?

The remainder is written after the quotient with an 'R' — for example, 29 ÷ 4 = 7 R1 — and students must understand that the remainder is always less than the divisor.

Why is it important that the remainder is always less than the divisor?

If the remainder were equal to or greater than the divisor, the quotient could be increased by 1 — so a remainder greater than the divisor signals an error in the quotient.
