Add Within 10, Count On
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Add Within 10, Count On" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core K.OA.A.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on addition, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and addition strategies never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Kindergarten math worksheet: add within 10 by counting on from the first number, one box at a time. Answer key included. Part of our addition strategies collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?

FAQ
How do I use this addition strategies worksheet?
⌄
Read the instructions aloud and work the first problem together. Keep a handful of small objects nearby so a child can build the problem before writing the answer. When a sheet is done, check it with the answer key and ask how your child found each sum.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Add within 10 by counting on from the first number, one box at a time. To count on, say the first number, then count up by the second number to add. Problems on the page include 7 + 2, 5 + 3 and 6 + 3. The directions on the page read: Start at the circled number and count on in the boxes. Then, write the last number after the equal sign. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this addition strategies worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten addition, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with addition strategies. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What addition strategies do kindergartners learn?
⌄
They start with concrete ones: counting two groups of objects, hopping forward on a number line, counting on from the first number and filling a ten frame. Later sheets add doubles, making 5 and making 10, which prepare children for the mental strategies in 1st grade.
What does count on mean?
⌄
Count on means starting at the first number and counting up by the second number instead of counting everything again. For 3 + 2, a child says 3, then 4, 5. The count on sheet gives a box for each count so the child can track the hops.
How can I use these sheets at home?
⌄
Do one sheet at a time and keep a handful of small objects nearby. If a child is stuck, build the problem with the objects first, then write the answer. Check with the answer key and ask how the child found the sum.
Which standards do these sheets support?
⌄
They support K.OA.A.5 (add within 5), K.OA.A.3 and K.OA.A.4 (break numbers apart and make 10) and K.OA.A.2 (add within 10).
When should kindergarteners start learning addition?
⌄
Most kindergarteners are ready to begin addition in the second half of the school year, typically around January or February. The Common Core standard K.OA.A.1 expects students to represent addition within 10 using objects, fingers, drawings, and equations by the end of kindergarten.
What addition skills should a kindergartener know?
⌄
By the end of kindergarten, students should fluently add within 5 (CCSS K.OA.A.5) and solve addition word problems within 10 (K.OA.A.2). They should understand that addition means putting together or adding to, and be able to decompose numbers up to 10 into pairs.
How can I help my kindergartener practice addition at home?
⌄
Use physical objects like blocks, buttons, or snacks to make addition concrete. Start with adding within 5, then progress to 10. Printable addition worksheets with pictures help bridge the gap between hands-on manipulatives and abstract number sentences.
