FAQ

How do I use this subtraction strategies worksheet?

⌄

Start with the pictures: have your child cross out the objects to take away and count what is left. Move to the number line and count back pages once taking away within 5 feels easy. Use the answer key to check, then talk about how the number got smaller.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Subtract within 5 by hopping left on a number line. To subtract on a number line, start at the first number and hop left. The directions on the page read: Look at the dot and the hop on each number line. Then, write the number sentence. The page opens with a worked example, and the answer key shows every answer.

Can I use this subtraction strategies worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten subtraction, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with subtraction strategies. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do I introduce a number line to a five year old?

⌄

Treat it as a path rather than a picture: your child puts a finger on a number and hops along it, saying each number as they land. Hopping physically is what makes the line make sense. Reading it as a diagram comes much later.

Why use a number line instead of counting objects?

⌄

Objects show how many. A number line shows order and distance, which objects cannot. It is the first tool that makes the gap between numbers visible, and it becomes essential for skip counting, comparison, and later for negative numbers and fractions.

My child counts the marks instead of the hops. Is that a problem?

⌄

It is the classic number line mistake and worth correcting gently. Count the jumps between numbers, not the numbers themselves. Saying "hop" out loud with each move usually fixes it within a session or two.

What does subtraction mean in kindergarten?

⌄

Subtraction means taking away: start with a group, take some away and count what is left. The sheets show the taken away objects crossed out or in a second color so children can see the story behind 5 - 2.

What does count back mean?

⌄

Count back means starting at the first number and counting down by the second number. For 7 - 2, a child says 7, then 6, 5. The count back sheet gives a box for each count so the child can track the steps.

Should children learn addition before subtraction?

⌄

Most children are more comfortable with subtraction once they can add within 10, because a subtraction fact is the other side of an addition fact. The number bond sheet shows how the whole, one part and the missing part fit together.

Which standards do these sheets support?

⌄

They support K.OA.A.5 (subtract within 5), K.OA.A.2 (subtract within 10 and solve take away stories) and K.OA.A.3 (break a number into two parts).

What subtraction concepts should kindergarteners learn?

⌄

Kindergarteners should understand subtraction as taking apart or taking from. Per CCSS K.OA.A.1, they should represent subtraction with objects, drawings, and equations within 10. Fluency is expected within 5 (K.OA.A.5).

How do you teach subtraction to a 5-year-old?

⌄

Start with concrete objects: give your child 5 crackers and ask them to eat 2, then count what remains. Use visual worksheets that show crossed-out items before introducing number sentences. The key is connecting the physical act of removing to the minus sign.

Is subtraction harder than addition for kindergarteners?

⌄

Most children find subtraction more challenging because it requires understanding that a group is getting smaller. Research suggests introducing subtraction alongside addition so students see them as related operations. Worksheets that pair addition and subtraction facts help build this connection.
