R-controlled vowels

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"R-controlled vowels - Christmas" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on phonics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and r-controlled vowels never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

How do I use this worksheet?

Begin with a shared reading or oral warm-up that highlights r-controlled vowels so students hear and see the skill in context before practicing it independently. Have students work through the first item together as a class, then finish the rest independently or with a partner, especially for phonics-based tasks where saying an answer aloud first helps. After completing the worksheet, use one or two examples from the page to start a discussion: "Where else have you seen this in your reading?" These r-controlled vowels worksheets are ideal for use during small group reading time, as independent center work, or as a homework activity.

What students will practice

  • Students will identify and apply r-controlled vowels knowledge to decode and comprehend grade-level text.

How do I use this r-controlled vowels worksheet?

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

These r-controlled vowels worksheets for 1st grade give students focused practice with one of the key skills in early literacy. Students read, identify, and respond to r-controlled vowels through a variety of activities designed for their grade level. Our phonics worksheets build both decoding skills and reading comprehension, helping students connect what they practice on paper to the books they read every day. Regular practice with r-controlled vowels strengthens the reading skills that 1st grade students need to become confident, independent readers.

Can I use this r-controlled vowels worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade phonics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with r-controlled vowels. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are r-controlled vowels?

⌄

R-controlled vowels (also called 'bossy R' words) occur when a vowel is immediately followed by the letter R, which changes the vowel's typical sound. The vowel is neither long nor short - ar sounds like in 'car,' er/ir/ur all sound like in 'her/bird/fur,' or sounds like in 'for.' The R 'controls' the vowel.

Why do r-controlled vowels get special instructional attention?

⌄

R-controlled patterns are among the most common patterns in English but don't follow the simple long/short rules. Many high-frequency words contain r-controlled vowels (for, her, are, or, more, first, bird). Explicit instruction prevents children from applying the wrong decoding rule to these words.

Which r-controlled pattern is most common?

⌄

The 'or' pattern (for, more, store, corn) is most frequent in early texts. 'Ar' (car, star, far) is also very common. The er/ir/ur group all make the same /ər/ sound - children learn all three spellings and must recognize each in reading even though they produce the same pronunciation.

What phonics skills are taught in first grade?

⌄

First graders learn long vowel patterns (CVCe like 'make'), common vowel teams (ai, ea, oa), consonant digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh), and r-controlled vowels (ar, or, er). Per CCSS RF.1.3, they should decode regularly spelled one-syllable words and read words with inflectional endings.

How many sight words should a first grader know?

⌄

Most first grade programs expect students to read 100-200 high-frequency sight words by year end. These include common words that do not follow standard phonics rules (the, was, said, could). Daily practice with sight word worksheets and reading builds automatic recognition.
