Spell Short A CVC Words
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Spell Short A CVC Words" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core L.K.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and CVC spelling patterns never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Kindergarten spelling worksheet: circle the first letter of each short a picture, then trace and copy pan and bat. Answer key included. Part of our CVC spelling patterns collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Say each picture name together, stretching the sounds, before your child circles anything. Do one vowel a day so each sound settles. Check with the answer key and have your child read the copied words back to you.
What students will practice

FAQ
How do I use this CVC spelling patterns worksheet?
⌄
Say each picture name together, stretching the sounds, before your child circles anything. Do one vowel a day so each sound settles. Check with the answer key and have your child read the copied words back to you.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle the first letter of each short a picture, then trace and copy pan and bat. The directions on the page read: Say each picture's name. Circle the letter it starts with. Then, trace each word and copy it. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this CVC spelling patterns worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with CVC spelling patterns. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are CVC spelling patterns?
⌄
CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant. Words like cat, pig and mop follow this pattern, with a short vowel in the middle. They are the first words most kindergartners can spell by sound.
Why teach one short vowel at a time?
⌄
Each short vowel sounds close to the others, so mixing them too early leads to guesses like pen for pin. These pages start with one vowel per page and only pair e and u once a and i and o are steady.
How do I help my child spell a CVC word?
⌄
Say the word slowly and stretch it: mmm, ooo, p. Have your child tap one finger for each sound, then write one letter for each tap. Tracing first gives the letter shapes before copying.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All four CVC spelling pages have an answer key showing the circled letters and the words.
What spelling should a kindergartener be able to do?
⌄
By the end of kindergarten, children write a letter for most consonant and short vowel sounds and spell simple words phonetically (CCSS L.K.2.C and L.K.2.D). Spelling three-letter CVC words like cat, hen and mop by sound is the main goal.
What is a CVC word?
⌄
A CVC word has a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, like sun, bed or pig. Children can sound out each letter, so CVC words are the first words most kindergarteners spell on their own.
How can I help my kindergartener spell words at home?
⌄
Say the word slowly and stretch each sound, then ask which letter makes that sound. Start with the first sound, then the last, then the middle vowel, which is hardest to hear. The CVC spelling pages follow the same order.
