Count the Hours of Sleep
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Count the Hours of Sleep" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on health and safety, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and sleep never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

How do I use this sleep worksheet?

Talk about your child's own bedtime as you work: what comes first, and what helps them fall asleep? Hang the finished bedtime routine chart in their room as a picture checklist. For the counting hours page, count the hours together on a real clock.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Six sleep pages for Kindergarten and 1st grade. Children cut out 4 pictures and order a bedtime routine, sort 8 day and night activities, circle the things that help them sleep, and count the hours between a bedtime clock and a wake-up clock. They also draw their own bedtime routine on a chart and match bedtime words to pictures with a grown-up. Five pages have an answer key.
Can I use this sleep worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten health and safety, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with sleep. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a good bedtime routine for kids?
⌄
The same few calm steps each night, like a bath, pajamas, brushing teeth and a story, then lights out. Drawing their own routine on the chart page gives children a picture list to follow.
How does the count the hours of sleep page work?
⌄
Children look at a bedtime clock and a wake-up clock and count the hours in between. It mixes a little telling time to the hour with a real health habit.
What health and safety topics should kindergarteners learn?
⌄
Most kindergarten health lessons cover washing hands and brushing teeth, covering coughs and sneezes, safety at home and on the street, getting enough sleep, staying active and making healthy food choices. These worksheets group them into five sets: hygiene and handwashing, safety, sleep, exercise and healthy habits at mealtime.
How do I teach my child the steps of handwashing?
⌄
Show the steps in order: wet your hands, add soap, scrub the front, back and between your fingers, rinse and dry. Many families sing a short song while scrubbing so children keep going long enough. The handwashing steps cut and paste page lets children put the steps in order themselves, which helps them remember the routine at the sink.
How much sleep does a kindergartener need?
⌄
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends 10 to 13 hours in every 24 hours, naps included, for children ages 3 to 5, and 9 to 12 hours for ages 6 to 12. A steady bedtime routine helps most. The sleep pages have children put a bedtime routine in order, sort day and night activities and count the hours between a bedtime clock and a wake-up clock.
Do these worksheets cover food groups and nutrition?
⌄
They cover healthy habits at mealtime: choosing water or milk, packing a healthy lunchbox, listening for hungry or full, mealtime manners and washing fruit. For food groups, healthy foods and fruits and vegetables, use the Kindergarten Food and Nutrition worksheets, which pair well with these pages.
