Me and My Friend Venn Diagram
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Me and My Friend Venn Diagram" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7). If your little one is a year younger but already steady on social-emotional learning, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and Friendship never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Free printable 1st grade SEL worksheet: fill in a Venn diagram on how you and a friend are different and alike, then finish the sentence. Part of our Friendship social-emotional learning collection.

FAQ
How do I use this Friendship worksheet?
⌄
Read each friendship problem aloud and talk about why one fix works better than the others. Let students practice the conversation starters with a partner. Share a few friendship recipes with the class, since hearing what others wrote is half the fun.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Six friendship pages for 1st and 2nd grade. Students cut out 8 cards and sort good friend traits, read friendship problems and pick the best way to fix each one, color the compliments and leave the put-downs, and finish sentence starters for talking to a new friend. Two writing pages have them write a recipe for friendship and compare themselves with a friend in a Venn diagram. Three pages have an answer key.
Can I use this Friendship worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade social-emotional learning, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with Friendship. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do kids learn to solve friendship problems?
⌄
By talking through a few choices and picking the one that is fair to everyone. On the friendship problems page, students read each problem and pick the best way to fix it, which is a good moment to ask why the other choices would not work as well.
What is a friendship recipe?
⌄
A writing page where students think about what makes a good friend and write it as a recipe, with ingredients like kindness and sharing. It is a fun way to put what they know about friendship into their own words.
What social-emotional skills do 1st and 2nd graders work on?
⌄
At 6 to 8, children are ready for bigger feeling words like frustrated, nervous and proud, and for noticing what caused a feeling. They practice solving friendship problems, giving compliments, seeing a situation from someone else's point of view, telling a small problem from a big one, and choosing a calm down strategy that works for them. These worksheets add short reading and writing to each skill.
What is a growth mindset for kids?
⌄
A growth mindset is the belief that you can get better at something with practice and effort. A child with a fixed mindset says I can't do it, while a child with a growth mindset says I can't do it yet. The growth mindset pages have children sort fixed and growth mindset sentences, add the word yet, and read a short story about a girl who learns from a mistake.
What does size of the problem mean?
⌄
Size of the problem is a way to help children match their reaction to what happened. A small problem, like losing a pencil, needs a small reaction and can be fixed alone. A big problem, like someone getting hurt, needs a grown-up right away. Sorting problems into small, medium and big on paper makes it easier to remember in the moment.
Are these social-emotional learning worksheets tied to a standard?
⌄
No. Social-emotional learning is taught alongside the core subjects, and these pages are not tagged to a Common Core or C3 Framework standard. Many schools follow their own SEL program, and these worksheets fit next to any of them as practice and discussion starters.
