How do I help a kindergartener give a reason for an opinion?

Ask why out loud before the child draws: "You picked dogs. What do you like about dogs?" Let the child say the reason first, then draw it in the box. A short sentence from you can be traced or copied if the child is ready.

Does my child need to read to use these worksheets?

No. A grown-up reads the page aloud, and the choices are pictures with short words to trace. Children trace the word they chose and draw their reason.

Is there an answer key for each opinion worksheet?

Yes. All 10 sheets have a one page key with a marking guide and a model drawing. Answers vary from child to child, so the key shows what a good response includes.

What writing skills do kindergartners practice?

Kindergartners practice opinion, informative and narrative writing through drawing, dictating and writing (CCSS W.K.1 to W.K.3), along with forming letters and starting a sentence with a capital. These pages keep the writing small: a child traces a word, draws a picture and a grown-up reads the directions aloud.

What order should I use the kindergarten writing pages in?

Start with the opinion pages, where a child picks a favorite and traces its name. Move to the narrative pages, which add first, next and last, then the informative All About pages and the writing process pages. Capital letters and writing practice pages can be mixed in at any point.

My child cannot write sentences yet. Can they use these?

Yes. The new sheets are built around tracing and drawing, so a child can finish them before writing a sentence alone. Ask your child to say the sentence out loud while you point to each word.

Is there an answer key for each writing worksheet?

Yes. All 36 new opinion, narrative, informative and writing process sheets have a one page answer key with a marking guide and a model drawing.
