Is It More Fun to Draw or to Paint

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Is It More Fun to Draw or to Paint" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core W.1.1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and opinion writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this opinion writing worksheet?

⌄

Read the topic aloud and let your child say the opinion before writing it. Ask for two reasons out loud, then have your child write them after the printed words. Read the sentences back together, and use the answer key where the page has one.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a made-up model about reading in bed, then draw and write whether drawing or painting is more fun with two reasons. An opinion is what you think or feel. A reason tells why you think it. The directions on the page read: Read the Model and the topic. Then, draw your choice in the box. Then, write 4 sentences, one on each row. Start each one with the printed words, and write your opinion first.

Can I use this opinion writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with opinion writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does 1st grade opinion writing require?

⌄

CCSS W.1.1 asks first graders to name a topic, state an opinion about it, give a reason, and provide some sense of closure. These sheets hold that structure steady with boxes and sentence frames so students focus on the ideas.

What sentence frames help a 1st grader give a reason?

⌄

Try "I think ___ because ___" and "One reason is ___. Another reason is ___. That is why ___." The keyed sheets practice because in a box for each part, and the open sheets print I think, One reason is, Another reason is and That is why at the start of each row.

How is an opinion different from a fact?

⌄

A fact can be checked, like cats are animals. An opinion tells what you think, like cats are the best pets. A good test is to ask whether someone could think differently and still be right.

Is there an answer key for each opinion worksheet?

⌄

Ten sheets have a key with a marking guide and a model answer. The other 12 pages, each with a model by a made-up student and printed starters, are open writing with no key, since each child picks their own side and reasons.
