A strong grade-2 paragraph has a topic sentence that states the main idea, two or three supporting detail sentences, and a closing sentence (CCSS W.2.1 and W.2.2). Second graders learn to keep all the sentences focused on one topic and to end punctuation and capitalize correctly throughout.

Use a simple frame: topic sentence, detail, detail, closing. Graphic organizers with a box for each part help students plan before they write. Start with informative paragraphs about a familiar subject, then move to opinion and narrative paragraphs so students practice each structure with scaffolding.
