Write a First Paragraph About Animals in Winter

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Write a First Paragraph About Animals in Winter" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on paragraph writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and paragraph structure never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a made-up paragraph about the beach, then plan 5 rows and write an indented paragraph on how animals prepare for winter. A paragraph is a group of sentences about one idea. The directions on the page read: Read the Model and the topic. Then, write a topic sentence in row 1, a detail in rows 2, 3 and 4 and a closing sentence in row 5. Then, write your paragraph on the next page. On page 2: Read your plan on page 1. Then, write your paragraph on the lines. Start after the arrow to indent the first line. Then, check each box on the checklist.

Can I use this paragraph structure worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade paragraph writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with paragraph structure. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a hamburger paragraph?

⌄

The top bun is the topic sentence, the lettuce, tomato and cheese are three details, and the bottom bun is the closing sentence. The train, ice cream cone and staircase planners use the same parts with a different picture.

What do the traffic light colors mean?

⌄

Green means go, so it holds the topic sentence. Yellow means slow down and explain, so it holds the details. Red means stop, so it holds the closing sentence. Use a Traffic Light Plan for a Paragraph About Dogs uses this plan.

Why does a paragraph start with an indent?

⌄

An indent, a small space before the first word, shows the reader where a new paragraph begins. Every planner reminds children to indent, and the two Write a First Paragraph sheets have an arrow that shows where to start.

Which paragraph structure sheets have answer keys?

⌄

The three practice sheets do: Pick the Best Topic Sentence for Each Paragraph, Cross Out the Detail That Does Not Belong and Choose a Closing Sentence for Each Paragraph. The seven planners have no key, since each child writes their own paragraph.
