My 2nd grader still writes slowly. Is that a problem?

Not necessarily. Speed comes after accuracy, and a 2nd grader who writes slowly but legibly is in better shape than one who writes fast and illegibly. That said, if handwriting speed is visibly slowing your child down on other schoolwork (unfinished worksheets, avoiding writing tasks), it's worth extra practice specifically on copying passages under a light time expectation, not to rush the child but to build the automaticity that makes handwriting feel less effortful. A worksheet that has your child copy a short passage they've already read once, rather than copying something new, removes the reading-comprehension load and lets them focus purely on the writing itself.

How is 2nd grade handwriting different from 1st grade?

1st grade handwriting is about writing letters and short sentences from a model. 2nd grade handwriting is about writing longer, more varied content (full sentences, short passages, proper nouns like days and months) with less reliance on a model and tighter, more consistent letter spacing within words. The guide lines used in worksheets often get narrower too, since a 2nd grader's letters should be smaller and more controlled than a 1st grader's. If your child's 2nd grade handwriting looks a lot like their 1st grade handwriting, wider lines and bigger letters, it's a sign they'd benefit from practicing on the narrower line spacing 2nd grade worksheets typically use.
