Frequently Asked Questions

By 2nd grade, a student should write legibly without lined guides being strictly necessary, form both uppercase and lowercase letters from memory with consistent size and spacing, and copy a full sentence or short passage without a letter-by-letter model. Two-digit numbers should be written correctly, with no gap between the digits. Days of the week and months of the year are a common focus at this grade because they combine capitalization rules (a proper noun always starts with a capital letter) with real handwriting practice on words longer than a typical 1st grade word list. By the end of 2nd grade, most schools consider print handwriting essentially finished as a formal subject, since cursive instruction usually begins around this point or shortly after.
