A Day on the Farm Narrative Writing
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"A Day on the Farm Narrative Writing" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and narrative writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this narrative writing worksheet?
⌄
Have your child plan in the boxes before writing the story on the lines. Ask for a time word at the start of each part and a feeling word at the end. Read the story aloud together and check it against the key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
2nd grade narrative writing page about a day on the farm. A narrative is a story. Details tell what you see, hear, and feel, so readers can picture it. The directions on the page read: Read the word bank. Then, write your story. Use at least three farm words. The answer key gives a marking guide and a model answer, since answers will vary.
Can I use this narrative writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with narrative writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does 2nd grade narrative writing require?
⌄
CCSS W.2.3 asks second graders to tell a well-developed event or short sequence of events, include details about actions, thoughts and feelings, use time words, and give a sense of closure. The sheets use planning boxes, webs and checklists to build each part.
How do I help my child add feelings to a story?
⌄
Ask how the person felt at the start and at the end. Several sheets provide a list of feeling words, like nervous, proud or surprised. A feeling word at the end gives the story a sense of closure.
What makes a story have a beginning, middle and end?
⌄
The beginning tells who and where, the middle tells the problem or the main events in order, and the end tells how it was solved or how the writer felt. A three box plan holds each part before writing.
Is there an answer key for each narrative worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 10 sheets include a key with a marking guide and a model story.
What writing skills should 2nd graders have?
⌄
Second graders write opinion pieces with reasons (CCSS W.2.1), informative paragraphs with facts and a conclusion (W.2.2), and narratives with details, feelings and time words (W.2.3). They also begin to revise and edit with guidance (W.2.5).
What is the difference between an opinion, a narrative and an informative piece?
⌄
An opinion tells what the writer thinks and why. A narrative tells a story in order. An informative piece teaches true facts about a topic. Each page in this topic names its type in the title, so you can choose the one you need.
How long should a 2nd grade paragraph be?
⌄
Four to seven sentences is typical: a topic or opinion sentence, two or three supporting sentences and a closing sentence. The planning boxes on these pages help children organize before they write.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 36 opinion, narrative, informative and writing process sheets have an answer key with a marking guide and a model answer.
