The Lost Dog Narrative Writing

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"The Lost Dog Narrative Writing" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing topics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and narrative writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this narrative writing worksheet?

⌄

Have your child plan before writing and read the story aloud once it is finished. For the dialogue page, act out the conversation first, then write each speaker on a new line. Check quotation marks against the key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

3rd grade narrative writing page about the lost dog. A narrative is a story. The problem is what goes wrong. The solution is how it gets fixed. The directions on the page read: Read the beginning. Then, plan how it ends. Then, finish the story on the lines. The answer key gives a marking guide and a model answer, since answers will vary.

Can I use this narrative writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade writing topics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with narrative writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does 3rd grade narrative writing require?

⌄

CCSS W.3.3 asks third graders to set up a situation and characters, tell events in a natural order, use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts and feelings, use time words, and provide an ending.

How do I teach dialogue in 3rd grade?

⌄

Dialogue is the words characters say, set inside quotation marks and attributed with a speaker, like "Come see," said Mia. The dialogue sheet gives a story and asks for six lines between two characters (W.3.3.B).

How do I help my child plan a story?

⌄

Use three parts: the beginning, the problem and the solution. Writing one sentence for each part before drafting prevents a story that wanders.

Do the narrative worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All three sheets include a key with a marking guide and a model story.

What writing skills do 3rd graders need?

⌄

Third graders write opinion pieces with linked reasons (CCSS W.3.1), informative texts that group facts (W.3.2) and narratives with dialogue and description (W.3.3). They also plan, revise and edit their work (W.3.5) and use capitals, commas and quotation marks correctly (L.3.2).

How do I help my child write a strong opening and ending?

⌄

Teach a hook for the first sentence, like a question to the reader, and a conclusion that restates the main idea in new words. The hook and conclusion sheets give an example and a checklist.

Do the 3rd grade writing worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 15 new sheets include an answer key with a marking guide and a model response.
