Restating the question
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Restating the question" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing topics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and restating the question never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Restating the question worksheet for 3rd grade: students restate each question as the first sentence of your answer. Part of our restating the question writing topics collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Introduce the skill with a brief whole-class activity, such as calling out examples and asking students to give a thumbs up when they hear restating the question in a sentence. Then let students work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, referring to a class anchor chart if one is available. When reviewing answers, ask students to explain why an answer is correct rather than just confirming it. These restating the question worksheets work well as a focused practice activity, a homework assignment, or a warm-up at the start of a language arts lesson.
What students will practice
- Students will identify and correctly use restating the question in sentences and short passages.
- Students will distinguish restating the question from related language concepts and apply rules consistently.
- Students will demonstrate understanding of restating the question through guided and independent practice, in both reading and their own writing.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄

Our writing topics worksheets connect grammar practice to reading and writing so students see how restating the question works in real language. Building a solid understanding of restating the question in 3rd grade sets students up for stronger writing and clearer communication in every subject.
Can I use this restating the question worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade writing topics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with restating the question. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does it mean to restate the question in a writing response?
⌄
Restating the question means taking the key words from the prompt and using them to write a topic sentence - for example, the question 'Why is sleep important?' becomes 'Sleep is important because...' as the first sentence.
Why is restating the question a valuable strategy for 3rd grade test preparation?
⌄
On short-answer and constructed-response test items, restating the question demonstrates comprehension, organizes the response, and signals to the reader (and test scorer) that the student understood what was being asked.
How do worksheets scaffold students in learning to restate questions?
⌄
Worksheets provide a question and a word bank from the prompt, then ask students to write their own restated topic sentence - progressing from guided practice with examples to independent restating without support.
How many 3rd Grade restating the question worksheets are there?
⌄
1 printable worksheet, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are restating the question worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these restating the question worksheets aligned to Common Core?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the Common Core code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
Can I use these restating the question worksheets for homeschool?
⌄
Yes. Nothing here assumes a classroom of 25, so they work the same one-to-one at the kitchen table as they do in a 3rd Grade classroom, a literacy centre, or a tutoring session.
