How do you add fractions with unlike denominators in fifth grade?

Per CCSS 5.NF.A.1, students must find a common denominator before adding. The most reliable method is finding the least common multiple of both denominators, converting each fraction, then adding numerators while keeping the denominator. Mixed number addition also requires converting improper fractions in the answer. Worksheets that show the steps explicitly help students internalize the procedure.

How do fifth graders add decimals correctly?

The key is aligning decimal points so that tenths align with tenths and hundredths with hundredths. This is the same logic as aligning ones with ones in whole-number addition. Encourage students to use graph paper or lined worksheets to keep columns aligned. CCSS 5.NBT.B.7 covers this skill, and estimation with compatible numbers is an important check on answers.
