The number 9

How to write 9

Start at the top and make a small circle going counter-clockwise, the same way you begin a lowercase a. Close the circle, then pull a straight line down from its right side to the bottom. A short rhyme: "A loop and a line make a 9."

Frequently Asked Questions

Nine is the last single-digit number, the one right before your child gets to shout "ten!" Its shape, a small loop with a line hanging down, is easy to mix up with 6 or with a lowercase g. Pre-K pages have children trace the number 9 with ice cream cones, green turtles, bananas and mushrooms, then count each group. They can also trace the word "nine," circle every 9 on a search page, and fill nine boxes on ten frame pages, which leaves just one box empty. Kindergartners count and color, print 9 beside a fox, trace and count, and practice recognition with an elephant.
