Build CVC Words With Letter Tiles
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Build CVC Words With Letter Tiles" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core L.K.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and CVC words never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this CVC words worksheet?
⌄
Read each word slowly with your child, pointing under each letter. For the letter tile page, help with cutting and let your child choose the tiles. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Cut out letter tiles with a grown-up and glue them to spell six CVC words. The directions on the page read: Ask a grown-up to help you cut out the letter tiles. Then, copy each word by gluing its tiles in the boxes. The answer key shows every answer.
Can I use this CVC words worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with CVC words. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
Why start spelling with CVC words?
⌄
Each letter in a CVC word makes one sound. A CVC word has a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, such as sun, pig or hat, so children can sound it out and spell it letter by letter.
How do letter tiles help with spelling?
⌄
Moving a tile for each sound lets children check their spelling before writing. A grown-up helps cut out the tiles, and the child glues them in order.
How are these different from the CVC spelling patterns pages?
⌄
The CVC spelling patterns pages work through one short vowel per page. These pages mix all the vowels and practice reading and building whole words.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. Each of the four pages has an answer key.
What spelling should a kindergartener be able to do?
⌄
By the end of kindergarten, children write a letter for most consonant and short vowel sounds and spell simple words phonetically (CCSS L.K.2.C and L.K.2.D). Spelling three-letter CVC words like cat, hen and mop by sound is the main goal.
What is a CVC word?
⌄
A CVC word has a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, like sun, bed or pig. Children can sound out each letter, so CVC words are the first words most kindergarteners spell on their own.
How can I help my kindergartener spell words at home?
⌄
Say the word slowly and stretch each sound, then ask which letter makes that sound. Start with the first sound, then the last, then the middle vowel, which is hardest to hear. The CVC spelling pages follow the same order.
