"Said" is one of the trickiest words in early reading. Kids expect the a and i to make their usual sounds, but together they say a short e, so the word sounds like "sed." It has to be remembered, not sounded out. Pre-K tracing gives slow practice: trace "said," write it on a line and circle it in a row. A find page hides it in a grid for kids to circle and count.
