How does the Venn diagram format help teach past versus present?

A Venn diagram sort asks students to place facts, pictures, or words into a 'past' circle, a 'present' circle, or the overlapping middle section for things true at both times, which is a visual way to represent comparison that works well before a child can write a full compare-and-contrast paragraph. For an all-about-me version, this might mean sorting things like 'could not walk,' 'can talk,' and 'has the same name' into the correct sections, letting a child reason concretely about what has changed and what has stayed the same about themselves. This same Venn diagram format reappears in the history topic for a more general past-and-present comparison, so mastering it here transfers directly to that later worksheet.

Why introduce the concept of time and change through a child's own life?

Time and historical change are genuinely difficult concepts for five and six year olds, who are still developing a stable sense of yesterday, last year, and long ago, so grounding the first past-and-present lesson in something as concrete and personally meaningful as their own growth gives the concept a foothold before it gets applied to unfamiliar historical content. A child who understands that they themselves have changed over time, they could not walk as a baby but can run now, has grasped the core logic of historical comparison in a way that transfers to comparing, say, old and new modes of transportation in a later lesson.

Frequently Asked Questions

An all-about-me worksheet in social studies uses the child's own life as the entry point for a broader concept, in this case past and present, asking students to sort or compare things about themselves as a baby versus themselves now. This connects to the C3 Framework's history strand (D2.His.2.K-2), comparing life in the past to life today, using the most personally relevant example a kindergartner has access to, their own growth, rather than an unfamiliar historical event. Starting the past-and-present concept with the child's own life, before extending it to broader history topics, makes an abstract idea concrete and easy to grasp.
