FAQ

What is the difference between a direct and an indirect object?

The direct object receives the action directly ('She gave the letter'), while the indirect object answers 'to whom?' or 'for whom?' the action was done ('She gave me the letter' — 'me' is indirect).

How can students tell if a sentence has an indirect object?

If the sentence has a direct object, students ask 'to whom?' or 'for whom?' — if there's an answer that isn't the direct object itself, that's the indirect object.

Is understanding indirect objects part of 5th grade grammar standards?

Yes — analyzing sentence components including objects is part of the Language and grammar expectations in Grade 5, and it builds toward clause analysis in middle school.
