What is a turning point?

The turning point is the moment a choice or an event changes what happens next. The story opener sheet has students plan the choice in boxes before finishing the story.

How do I help build suspense?

Suspense makes readers want to know what happens next. Start with a hook, slow down the key moment with description, and hold back what is in the cave until the end.

Do the narrative worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. Both sheets include a key with a marking guide and a model story.

What writing skills do 5th graders need?

Fifth graders write opinion pieces with logically ordered reasons (CCSS W.5.1), informative texts with facts and quotations (W.5.2) and narratives with dialogue, description and pacing (W.5.3). They also plan, revise and edit (W.5.5), gather information and summarize it (W.5.8) and cite text evidence (RI.5.1).

How do I teach a thesis statement?

A thesis statement names the topic and makes a point in one sentence. Compare a weak version, "I like lunch," with a strong one that gives a reason, then have your child write one for each new topic and check it against a three-point checklist.

How do I help my child use evidence from a text?

Have your child answer the question first, then point to the sentence in the passage that proves the answer. A strong response names the evidence and explains how it supports the answer.

Do the 5th grade writing worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. All 15 new sheets include an answer key with a marking guide and a model response.
