What is the difference between a coordinating and a subordinating conjunction?⌄
Coordinating conjunctions join equally important clauses, while subordinating conjunctions create a dependent relationship — one clause becomes subordinate (less important) and cannot stand alone.
What is a dependent clause and how does a subordinating conjunction create one?⌄
A subordinating conjunction placed at the beginning of a clause makes it dependent ('Because it was raining') — the clause now needs an independent clause to complete the thought.
When do students use a comma with a subordinating conjunction?⌄
When the dependent clause comes first in the sentence, a comma separates it from the main clause ('Although she was tired, she kept reading'); when the main clause comes first, no comma is needed.
