Free printable stem-and-leaf plots worksheets for 5th grade. Students construct and interpret stem-and-leaf plots to organize two-digit data sets, reading individual data values while also seeing the overall distribution shape. These plots bridge raw data and summary statistics in a uniquely transparent way. Part of our data & graphing worksheets collection.

What You'll Learn

  • Read and create stem-and-leaf plots from data sets
  • Identify stems and leaves to organize two-digit data
  • Find range, mode, and median using stem-and-leaf plots

FAQ

What information can be read directly from a stem-and-leaf plot that a bar graph hides?

A stem-and-leaf plot preserves every individual data value (unlike a bar graph which shows only counts), so students can read the exact minimum, maximum, median, mode, and range directly from the display.

How do students construct a stem-and-leaf plot?

Students split each data value into a 'stem' (the tens digit) and a 'leaf' (the ones digit), list all stems in order on the left side of a vertical line, and write each corresponding leaf to the right of its stem in ascending order.

What is a back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot, and do 5th graders encounter it?

A back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot shows two data sets (e.g., boys' and girls' scores) on opposite sides of a shared stem — some 5th grade worksheets introduce this format as an extension for students ready for a comparative data display.
