FAQ
What is the definition of a prime number, and why is 1 not prime?⌄
A prime number has exactly two distinct positive factors: 1 and itself. The number 1 is not prime because it has only one distinct positive factor, and the definition requires exactly two.
What is the fastest way for a 5th grader to test if a number is prime?⌄
Test divisibility by all primes up to the square root of the number — if none of them divide it evenly, it's prime. For numbers under 100, testing 2, 3, 5, and 7 is sufficient (since √100 = 10).
How does knowing prime numbers help with other 5th grade math skills?⌄
Recognizing primes speeds up GCF and LCM calculations (primes cannot be factored further), simplifies fraction work, and is the starting point for understanding the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic.
