The algorithm is the same — multiply each digit by the single-digit factor from right to left, regrouping as needed — but students now manage three column multiplications and potentially three carry operations.

The factor is distributed across the hundreds, tens, and ones of the 3-digit number, generating three partial products that are then added: for 243 × 6, students compute 200 × 6 + 40 × 6 + 3 × 6.
